About

Iminomiya Shrine in Chofu, Shimonoseki, holds this festival in front of a monument to the arrival of silkworm eggs. Tradition says that during Emperor Chuai's reign, Koman-o, said to descend from China's first emperor, presented silkworm eggs to the emperor, and this spot is regarded as where they first reached Japan from China. The monument went up in 1933, paid for by donations from all over the country and made from a huge stone that was meant for building Osaka Castle. Cocoons are offered at the rite, weaving and silk-spinning are demonstrated, and visitors are served green tea and cocoon sweets. It is a day for remembering when silk farming supported people's livelihoods.
