About

Kitamuki Jizo in the Nishikiwa area of Ube holds its grand festival on the January fair day. The story goes that in the Meiji era a person suffering from illness had a prayer answered here, and worshippers have kept coming ever since; the Jizo is thought to be especially good for ailments of the lower body. Fair days come around on the 24th of every month, but January's, called the kan-kuyo or midwinter memorial, is the special one, with stalls lining the way and bigger crowds. Plenty of extra buses run from Ube-Shinkawa Station on the day.
