About

For three days, Friday to Sunday, in early August, the streets around JR Anjo Station turn into one long Tanabata display. Bamboo decorations line about 2 km of road, a stretch claimed as the longest in Japan. The festival's motto is "Japan's No. 1 for wishes": since 2009 it has built its program around making wishes, and in 2013 its wish strips set a world record. At the central Negaigoto Hiroba (Wish Plaza) you can write your own wish on a paper strip, visit a small Tanabata shrine and drop by the base of Kiibo, the festival mascot. People come from well beyond Anjo. In 2027 the festival holds its 74th edition, themed "Saku" (Bloom), and is run by the Anjo Tanabata Festival Association.
