About
Toward the end of the year, Masumida Shrine, the leading shrine of old Owari Province, takes delivery of a colossal kagami mochi, the stacked rice cake that greets the New Year. Members of the shrine's farmers' support group pound it from five bales of rice, and it weighs about 300 kg. It is brought into the main sanctuary along with a boat loaded with vegetables, and a ceremony is held to tell the gods of the offering. In 2025 this happened on December 29 from 10:00; moving the cake takes a while, so timings can slip a little. The shrine is around 8 minutes on foot from Meitetsu Ichinomiya and JR Owari-Ichinomiya stations, and there is parking for those who drive.
