About
This is the Hana Matsuri of Nakazaike, one district of Toei. The Hana Matsuri of Oku-Mikawa are sacred rites said to have lasted over 700 years and are a National Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property; in Toei, districts take turns holding them from November to January. Nakazaike is a tiny hamlet of about nine households, and with help from neighbors the dancing goes on from morning into the night. Look for the Flower Dance, where young dancers make their entrance on adults' shoulders, and for the extra-large axes carried by the Sakaki-oni and Yamawari-oni demons. In the morning demon segment, Mokichi-oni swings a mallet to knock down a lucky "beehive." The Sakaki-oni and the yubayashi hot-water dance are the main draws. The festival came here from Ashikomi in 1872, reportedly the only Hana Matsuri whose route of transmission is on record.
