About
Tagata Shrine's Honen (Harvest) Festival in Komaki is famous at home and abroad as one of Japan's most unusual festivals. The portable shrine carried by men in their unlucky year holds a giant phallus carved from Kiso cypress, about 60 cm across and over 2 m long. The procession leaves the Shinmei-sha resting shrine at 14:00 and reaches Tagata Shrine around 15:30, praying for good harvests, the growth of all things and many descendants. It is an intangible folk cultural property of Komaki City and attracts plenty of overseas visitors. For an English-speaking guide, book with the Komaki Interpreters Volunteer Group by the day before. There is no public parking on the day, so travel by train, for example to Tagata-jinja-mae Station on the Meitetsu Komaki Line.
