About
On the fourth Sunday of January, the fishing port of Morozaki lights a winter fire festival. Tall washi banners asking for good health, big catches and good business go up beside New Year decorations gathered from local homes and a paper boat filled with old talismans. After sacred sake is poured and the fire takes, young men in loincloths, bodies painted red and blue, shoulder the blazing boat, circle the banner and shove it out to sea. Then they release the banner's ropes and topple and raise it in the smoke and flames until it burns away. A rice-cake toss closes the day; locals say a cake toasted on a pole keeps summer sickness away. The tradition is believed to go back to the Muromachi period. The large banners were not put up in 2026.
