About

On January 15, Shinto priests at Atsuta Jingu shoot at a huge target in the courtyard before the Kaguraden hall, praying for a good harvest and protection from harm. The rite is said to follow a New Year court custom and goes by the popular name Omato. A report ceremony starts at 10:00, and the archery at 13:00. Six priests shoot in three pairs, each firing two arrows three times, 36 arrows in total, at the chigi wooden strip in the center of a target about 1.8 m (6 shaku) across. The moment the last arrow is loosed, the crowd rushes the target to grab pieces of the chigi, long believed to keep evil away. That scramble is what most people come to see.
