About
Seto, a historic pottery town, hosts one of Japan's largest ceramics festivals. The centerpiece is a huge bargain market: the streets along the Seto River are closed to traffic, and about 200 stalls sell everything from everyday dishes to artists' pieces, drawing hundreds of thousands of visitors from across the country. At the Blue Plaza you can see and buy Seto sometsuke blue-and-white ware and watch artisans at work. About 1,000 fireworks go up on the first night. The festival started in 1932 to honor Kato Tamikichi, the "father of porcelain," who learned porcelain-making in Kyushu in the Edo period and brought it home; 2027 brings its 96th edition. Owari-Seto Station on the Meitetsu Seto Line is right by the venue, and with little parking, public transport is recommended.
