About
Throughout November, the Korankei gorge in Asuke, Toyota, celebrates its autumn color. Every evening of the festival, from sunset to 21:00, Mt. Iimori and the red Taigetsu Bridge are illuminated, and the lights reflected on the Tomoe River give the valley a completely different mood from the daytime. There is an opening ceremony on the first day, and on set dates a road-safety parade through the old streets and wandering chindon bands. The maples here are said to go back about 400 years, to Sanei, the eleventh priest of Kojakuji Temple, who planted them while chanting sutras. The name Korankei, given in 1930, joins a character from the temple's name with one for the mountain air blowing across the river. The festival began in 1950 and 2026 is its 71st year.
