About

Held over five days each February in the Rokugo district of Misato, this Little New Year festival is a nationally designated Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property. It opens with the ceremonial opening of storehouses and the first tenpitsu calligraphy, and ends on the final night with the bamboo battle and the burning of the tenpitsu. It preserves traces of the New Year fire rite once held at the Kyoto Imperial Palace, said to have been brought to Rokugo in the Kamakura period by the Nikaido clan, and has long been a fire festival praying for a good harvest. In the highlight, the bamboo battle, residents split into a north and a south army and clash with bamboo poles. Few Little New Year rites survive in such original form.
