About

For more than 300 years, the fishing community of Konoura in Nikaho has offered cod to its local gods. Winter cod caught in the cold season are carried by pairs of bearers about two kilometers from Konoura Fishing Port to Konoura-san Shrine. There the fish are presented to the deity while Konoura kagura dances are performed, in a rite praying for safety at sea and a plentiful catch. Cod caught in the coldest weeks of winter have firm flesh, and local restaurants serve seasonal cod in hot pots, tempura and cod soup. Note that whether the procession through town takes place varies from year to year.
