About

Hase Peony Garden sits partway up Mt. Nakui, within a prefectural natural park, and this festival celebrates its spring bloom. The garden began in 1979, after parishioners of the neighboring Ekoin temple received peony seedlings from Hasedera in Sakurai, Nara – the head temple of their sect – and the town has tended it ever since. Today about 8,000 peonies of 130 varieties, the flower known in China as the "king of flowers," fill the garden with large, colorful blooms often called the finest in the Tohoku region. The garden was also named one of Japan's 100 Fragrant Landscapes by the Ministry of the Environment in 2001. Peak bloom runs from late May to early June, and the flowers are lit up on some evenings during the festival.
