About

Held mainly over a weekend in early April, this spring festival fills Matsuyama Castle and the city center just as the cherry trees bloom, drawing blossom viewers and travelers alike. The headline event is the Daimyo Musha Gyoretsu, in which a procession tied to the past lords of Matsuyama Castle marches through the streets in proper armor and kimono. Plenty of other events involve local people, including a national yakyuken contest and stage shows at Horinouchi in Shiroyama Park. The festival started in 1967 (Showa 42) to celebrate the decision to rebuild the castle's small keep. In 2026 the lineup also included a citizens' parade, a food festival at Horinouchi and a display of working vehicles.
