About
Over two days in January, the second Sunday and Coming of Age Day, Yu Shrine next to Dogo Onsen holds a New Year festival. The grounds stay busy with a lucky rice-cake throw, a dondo-yaki bonfire for burning old talismans, a prize lottery, rice-cake pounding, lion dances and suigun drumming, and since this is a hot spring town, there is a footbath too. People come to pray for good harvests, good business and a safe household. The festival is said to have started on the first Day of the Rat in the eleventh month of the lunar calendar, a nod to the legend that the deity Okuninushi was rescued by a mouse. It is organized by a committee from the Dogo shopping street. Everything is outdoors and free to watch, so it fits nicely into a walk around Dogo Onsen.
