About
On the last Sunday of January, the riverbank of the Iwamatsu River in Tsushima, Uwajima, hosts a winter food festival. The biggest draw is odorigui: eating live ice gobies, called shirauo here, caught in the river right beside you, and they can sell out. There is also a free corner where you can try catching them yourself. Shirauo are seen locally as a sign of spring, and the catch peaks around February when they swim up the river to spawn. A local industry fair the same day sets out regional dishes and specialty goods, with a speed-eating contest of roppo, a local dish said to be where tai-meshi sea bream rice began, plus rice-cake throwing, a prize draw and taiko drumming. An ushioni, the ox-demon that stars in Uwajima's festivals, roams the grounds as well.
