About
On the night of the harvest moon and the adjoining day, two days in all, residents of Uchiko's historic Yokaichi-Gokoku district light handmade lanterns under their eaves. The old merchant houses glow out of the dark, and the whole street looks like a film set. The garden of the Hon-Haga Residence, an Important Cultural Property, is illuminated, and koto music drifts out of townhouses with their doors thrown open. Along the street there are spots where anyone can write and submit a haiku. Events at the Kami-Haga Residence and moon-viewing dumplings at the shops round out the evening. The event is run by a local organizing committee. Cars cannot enter the preservation district during event hours, so park at the townscape parking lot and walk in.
