About
Once a year, from June 9 to 11, Suwa-Azuki Shrine in Ikeda Town holds its grand festival over three days. It opens with an eve rite, followed by the Urayasu-no-mai dance performed by local children, the main ceremony, mikoshi processions for adults and for children, children's sumo and stage shows including taiko, with the whole town turning out. The shrine is the head shrine of Ikeda's 48 villages and something of a town emblem; its name comes from its two deities, the gods of Suwa and Azuki. Its main hall, a national Important Cultural Property, is said to have been donated by the Asakura clan in the Warring States period. Walk to the back of the grounds to see the Inari Great Cedar, said to be well over a thousand years old and one of the biggest trees in Hokuriku.
