About

From late June to early August, Hanahasu Park in Minamiechizen holds a summer-long lotus festival, with about 130 varieties of lotus from around the world in bloom and plenty of visitors coming to see them. The season is packed with lotus-related activities, and one to try is zobihai, the elephant-trunk cup: a hole is pierced in a broad lotus leaf and you drink through its hollow stem like a straw, the name coming from the stem's resemblance to a trunk. Workshops include dyeing cloth with lotus leaves and stems, making ornaments from seed pods and crepe fabric, and crafting small lotus-themed stained-glass pieces. Entry to the park is free, and shuttle buses run from nearby stations and the roadside station.
