About

On the last Sunday of January, Honmachi-dori Street in Katsuyama turns into a winter market lined with stalls of woodwork, folk crafts and local specialties, and the "machi-seri" auction lets you bid on each shop's pick of the day. For locals it is a sure sign that winter has arrived. The market goes back to the mid-1700s, when, after the Ogasawara lords took over, it was set up to help merchants thrive and to tie the town more closely to the surrounding villages; it was also called the twenty-sixth-day market. In those days it ran on the twenty-sixth of the last month and of the first month, with mountain farmers, forest workers, town merchants and peddlers setting up at dawn and trading altar decorations, lucky charms, kitchenware and food late into the night. Mortars, snowshoes and cutting boards were said to be the best sellers.
