About

At the Uminpia Ohi roadside station, Ohi Town takes its traditional ogase fire rite out over the sea for a summer night spectacle. Leaf-shaped torches 20 m tall and weighing 1 ton are set ablaze, then whirled around on their poles, toppled and hoisted again, so the flames seem to rampage across the dark water; up close it is breathtaking. Ogase has been practiced in communities around Ohi for over 300 years and is an intangible folk cultural property, traditionally offered for protection from fire and for good harvests. Each torch is made from a 14 m cypress pole fitted with 5 tiers of crossbars in a leaf shape and tied with bundles of reeds and pampas grass. Paid seating includes torch-side and fireworks-view seats, an eve festival is held the day before, and the site is about 15 minutes on foot from JR Wakasa-Hongo Station.
