About
Tsuruga's festival marks the start of autumn and centers on the rites of Kehi Jingu Shrine on September 2, 3 and 4, with other events arranged around them each year. Because it stretches from the eve rites through after-festivals to a closing monthly rite, it is known as the long festival of Kehi. On September 2, the Yoiyama eve, children dance on floats called yoiyama as they move through town to flutes and drums. On September 3, the imperial palanquin of Emperor Chuai, the shrine's deity, tours the city to gagaku music in a procession of brocade banners, armored guards, priests on sacred horses, children and musicians, all following old ceremonial form. On September 4, the grand festival brings out 6 historic floats, known for life-size figures in genuine Noh masks and armor portraying Sengoku warlords. Shopping-street festival plazas, a folk dance evening and a citizens' carnival parade round things out.
