About
In autumn, when the haze (Japanese wax tree) avenue at Yanagisaka-Sone in Kurume's Yamamoto area turns red, this festival is held beneath it. The avenue runs for about 1.2 km with some 200 trees, mostly of the Ikichi-haze variety, planted by the Kurume domain in 1742 to supply wax for lighting. Lined with old trees about 5 to 6 meters tall, the road is a Fukuoka Prefecture Natural Monument and is listed among Japan's 100 finest roadside tree landscapes. On weekends and holidays during the festival, cars are kept out and the road becomes a walking street, so you can take your time under the red canopy. It is held even when it rains.
