About
For three nights around the anniversary of the poet Kitahara Hakushu's death, lantern-lit donko boats drift through the canals of Yanagawa, the water town that inspired his verse. After an opening ceremony at the Hakushu Poetry Monument Garden, the boats set off along a route of about 4 km. Stages along the banks greet them with local folk arts, taiko, choirs and brass bands, paper lanterns float on the water, and fireworks mark the end of the route. The event began on the tenth anniversary of his death and holds its 74th edition in 2026. To ride, book through the Yanagawa City Tourism Association; you can choose a private boat or a shared one.
