About
Isasumi Shrine, the leading shrine of the Aizu region, saves its biggest celebration for midsummer rice planting. The rite, an Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property of Japan, is known as the midday planting and ranks with the morning planting at Ise Jingu and the evening planting at Atsuta Jingu among Japan's three great planting rites. Look out for the saotome dance, performed by farmers' eldest sons dressed as women, the Dekosama planting puppets and old planting songs. The main day is July 12: local children open it with a noisy lion chase through town, followed by a mikoshi procession and the planting ceremony. Purification and eve rites take place on July 11. In 2026 the festival ran July 11 to 13.
