About
Tajima in Minamiaizu holds a summer festival ranked with Kyoto's Gion Matsuri and Hakata's Gion Yamakasa among Japan's three great Gion festivals. At dawn on the main day, women in elaborate bridal kimono walk in a line to the shrine in the Nanahokai procession, sometimes called the finest bridal procession in Japan. In the evenings of the eve and the main day, children act out kabuki on big floats as they are hauled briskly through town. The festival is still managed by a traditional community body known as the Otoya, and it is a National Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property. Aizu-Tajima Station on the Aizu Railway is right next to the festival area.
