About
At Itsukushima Shrine in the Hobara area of Date City, young men in loincloths fight over a huge tsutsuko in a three-way tug of war. Purified beforehand, they split into three teams and pull with everything they have, praying for thriving business, rich harvests and good health. It has been chosen as one of Fukushima Prefecture's ten most unusual festivals, and the city lists it as an intangible folk cultural property. The shrine is about five minutes on foot from Hobara Station on the Abukuma Express line. In 2026 it took place on March 1. Inquiries go to the festival committee based at the shrine.
