About

Iizaka Onsen in Fukushima City hosts the autumn grand festival of Hachiman Shrine, the hot-spring town's guardian shrine, and it is reckoned one of Japan's three great fighting festivals. The main event is a clash of six drum floats strung with lanterns: fired-up young men carry them into the shrine grounds and ram them together, as if to bar the way of the portable shrine. Night-time shouts and the thud of colliding floats echo through the spa town. In 2026 it ran October 2 to 4. The shrine is in Iizaka-machi, about 15 minutes on foot from Iizaka-Onsen Station on the Fukushima Kotsu Iizaka Line. There is no parking at the shrine, so take the train. Inquiries go to the shrine office.
