About
Each May, Onahama Suwa Shrine in Iwaki carries its portable shrines through the port district. On the eve, men in loincloths plunge into the shrine's purification pond and pray for a safe festival. On the main day, the Senkan mikoshi, weighing about 2 tonnes, and a second large mikoshi tour Onahama, and lucky food offerings and white folding fans are tossed from above. Fan-throwing and a roadside rite are also held at the Iwaki LaLaMew roadside station and Aquamarine Park. In 2026 the eve fell on May 2 and the main festival on May 3.
