About
Each year the temple town of Tanigumisan Kegonji in Ibigawa holds its Harvest Prayer Festival, and this dance is the offering at its center, welcoming spring and asking for a good year's crops. It belongs to the family of drum dances found in villages along the upper Ibi River. Dancers in matching costumes wear a large fan of bamboo work called a shinai on their backs, modeled on phoenix feathers, and beat drums held at their chests. Said to go back more than 800 years, it was a rain dance for farmers in the Edo period and is now danced for a good harvest. It is performed 3 times through the day, moving from the former Meitetsu Tanigumi Station to the temple-town parking area and on to the Nio Gate, so you can follow it along.
