About
The Hirayu Onsen hot-spring village in Okuhida holds a winter festival at Hirayu Great Falls, a 64-meter waterfall counted among the three great falls of Hida. As the deep cold arrives in late December, the falling water slowly freezes into huge columns of ice, and during the festival they are lit in green and blue so the frozen falls stand out against the snow at night. Each day a bazaar near the Ankiya restaurant hands out free zenzai (sweet red-bean soup) and amazake (a sweet, non-alcoholic rice drink). Every night fireworks go up over the snow from the Hirayu Onsen ski area, best viewed between Ankiya and Kamoshika Bridge. Admission is free; bad weather can delay or cancel the fireworks.
