About

In early December, when the winter cherries are in full bloom, Sakurayama Park in the Onishi area of Fujioka holds its festival. The trees, about 7,000 of them, are designated a national Place of Scenic Beauty and Natural Monument. They flower from mid-November to early December, so white blossoms appear alongside late autumn color, a combination you rarely see. The park is lit up at night during the season. A ceremony in honor of the blossoms opens the festival, followed by singing, taiko and dance on stage, and the local specialty tocchanage-jiru soup is served. The festival reached its 100th edition in 2025. It is organized by the Fujioka City Tourism Association.
