About
On the second Saturday of December, Tenmyoji, a temple of the Shingon Buzan school in Ikehata-machi, Maebashi, lights a goma fire before heaps of donated vegetables, especially Kokufu Chinese cabbage, a local brand. The fire of the temple's main deity, Fudo Myoo, is believed to burn away the year's wrongs, desires and bad ties, bless the produce and purify those who attend. When the ritual ends, the fire is damped down for a fire walk open to everyone. Blessed vegetables and fruit are given away free, and there are fresh-produce stands, food stalls and food trucks. The temple also takes old charms and amulets for ritual burning, so bring any you have.
