About

Every November 19 and 20, Kiryu Nishinomiya Shrine holds its Ebisu-ko, a familiar sign of autumn in Kiryu. The shrine received its deity in 1901 from Nishinomiya Shrine in Hyogo, head shrine of Ebisu, and is the only direct branch of it in the Kanto region. Daikoku is worshipped here too, and a steady stream of visitors comes to pray for good business and a safe home. Stalls selling lucky charms such as treasure ornaments and kumade rakes stretch along the way to the shrine, and the approach gets so packed that moving is slow going. The festival runs nonstop from the morning of the first day through the night to the evening of the second, and on the morning of the 20th runners dash for the main hall in the Fukuotoko (lucky man) race.
