About

Each autumn, Maebashi's central shopping streets host this citywide celebration, one of the city's three big festivals. It started in 1948, shortly after the war, as a reconstruction festival expressing hope and energy as the city recovered from wartime damage. It became the Maebashi Commerce and Industry Festival in 1949 and took its present name in 1959, and today neighborhood associations, companies and all kinds of groups take part. Along the streets come elementary school fife-and-drum bands, the Danbe Odori, a clapper dance born in Maebashi, float processions, mikoshi and Gion floats, with people of every age in festival dress. The mikoshi get livelier as night falls. It is about a 15-minute walk from JR Maebashi Station.
