About

For 3 days in early July, Tanabata decorations fill the shopping streets of central Maebashi. The city has backed the festival since 1951, and 2026 was its seventy-sixth year. What sets Maebashi apart is how much is handmade: each street competes with its own ideas, from scenes of old tales and current events to displays that move with motors, and a contest judges the entries, which you can see on site. At Maebashi Central Event Square there are stands for hanging wish cards and workshop booths, while Bambagawa-dori has lanterns and a corner for writing wishes. Food stalls line the way, and crowds linger into the night.
