About
This is the summer festival of the Yasaka shrines in Kami-Shinden and Shimo-Shinden, along the old Nikko Reiheishi-kaido road (Prefectural Route 142) that runs east to west through Tamamura. Neighborhood floats travel back and forth along the old highway, and the moment to see is the bukkomi, when floats face off and drum against each other to see whose festival music is best. Usually four floats take part, but lately older floats from two neighborhoods have joined to make six. The floats set out in the late afternoon, and after dark their lanterns are lit, wrapping the whole road in a gentle glow, a classic Tamamura summer scene.
