About
Over the Obon holiday, from August 13 to 15, central Fukuyama puts on a different event each evening. The 13th belongs to the Niagari Odori contest: dancers clack pairs of bamboo yotsudake as they move to an elegant, faintly wistful beat, a dance listed as an Intangible Folk Cultural Property of Hiroshima Prefecture, and spectators are quickly drawn into the mood. On the 14th the downtown arcades become the Fukuyama Yukata Festival, with night stalls to browse and a stamp rally to complete. The 15th closes things out with the Ashidagawa Fireworks Display, where a 1.4 km Star Mine stretches across the broad Ashida River. Both banks serve as viewing areas, and the bursts are mirrored in the water.
