About

After dark on August 6, the anniversary of the atomic bombing, the Motoyasu River beside Peace Memorial Park fills with floating lanterns. The practice is said to date from around 1947, when people who had lost family and friends to the bomb of August 6, 1945 set homemade lanterns on the river in their memory. Today it is kept going by Hiroshima shopping-street associations and citizen volunteers. Anyone can join in. Buy a lantern sheet at a reception tent and write your thoughts on peace or life on the colored paper. You can then assemble it and launch it yourself from the riverside terrace, or hand it to the organizers to release from their boat. The lights drift slowly downstream with the Atomic Bomb Dome on the far bank.
