About
From November 18 to 20, people hoping for a good year in business crowd into Ebisu Shrine in Ebisucho, Naka Ward, Hiroshima, for its autumn festival. Locals call it Ebisu-ko or Ebessan, and say winter has arrived once it comes around. Together with the Tokasan and Sumiyoshi festivals it is counted among Hiroshima's three great festivals, and it is said to have run for roughly 400 years. Instead of an offering box, a big open-topped barrel sits in front of the shrine. The thing to buy is a komazarae, a bamboo rake hung with gold coins and treasure ships for luck. The surrounding shopping streets hold seimon-barai sales, and food stalls set up along the Chuo-dori sidewalks. The shrine is right next to the south exit of Hiroshima Mitsukoshi.
