About
This spring festival on Miyajima remembers Taira no Kiyomori, who laid the groundwork for the island's prosperity. Its main attraction is a costumed procession modeled on the Taira clan's pilgrimage to Itsukushima Shrine. It sets off from the Kiyomori statue at the Miyajima pier plaza, makes its way through the Omotesando shopping street to Mikasa-no-hama, worships at Itsukushima Shrine, and carries on via Nishi-matsubara to Kiyomori Shrine. The warriors, young nobles, shirabyoshi dancers and pilgrims are all played by members of the public who signed up. With the cherry blossoms just beginning to open, the procession looks like a Heian picture scroll come to life. Inquiries go to the festival's executive committee at the Miyajima Tourist Association.
