About

Held in early February, when Asahikawa's average temperature stays below freezing, this "festival of snow, ice and light" grew out of a wish to turn the city's heavy snowfall into something joyful. First held in February 1960, it is known for one of the world's largest snow sculptures, measuring about 140 m wide and 20 m high, alongside snow statues made by local volunteers. Works from the Ice Sculpture World Competition are another highlight. The 2027 edition will be the sixty-eighth.
