About

Sapporo's signature winter event began in 1950, when local junior-high and high-school students set up six snow statues in Odori Park. It gained worldwide fame with the 1972 Sapporo Winter Olympics, and an international snow sculpture contest has been held since 1974. The main Odori Park site stretches across eleven city blocks, anchored by five huge snow sculptures alongside smaller works and winter attractions. In Susukino, ice sculptures glitter under the neon of the entertainment district, and a third site is set at the Tsudome sports facility. The 2027 edition will be the seventy-seventh.
