About

Hakodate's biggest summer festival fills the whole city with events. It began after a devastating fire in 1934: to lift the spirits of a city still rebuilding, the first port festival was held to mark the anniversary of the port's opening, and the Hakodate Minato Odori dance was created for it. In 1980 a group of residents invented the playful Ika Odori, or squid dance, which joined the festival the following year. Today the highlights are the Doshin fireworks display launched over Hakodate Port and Wasshoi Hakodate, a parade in which crowds of locals dance through the streets to the port dance and the squid dance.
