About
Organized by the Tokachi Mainichi newspaper, this fireworks festival is held at a purpose-built venue on the banks of the Tokachi River in Obihiro. It began in 1929 as the first fireworks display in Hokkaido, launched to boost local industry, and about 50,000 people are said to have turned out for the first show. After a break caused by the war, it was revived in 1956 as part of Obihiro's summer festival. Since then it has kept reinventing itself, adding lasers and sound, then shows synchronized with lighting and music, and in 2025 its first drone show. The venue opens in the afternoon and the fireworks light up the night sky after dark; the organizer describes it as held every year on August 13.
