About

The hot-spring village of Sounkyo in Kamikawa builds a winter wonderland of ice from late January into early March. Walk through a tunnel hung with icicles to a lookout over the grounds, press a coin onto the ice at the Ice Waterfall Shrine, and catch taiko drumming and Ainu dance on the snow stage, with fireworks lighting up the night. Warm up by the wood stove in the rest house, sip local Kamikawa sake in an ice bar, or ride the tube slide. It gets bitterly cold, so dress warmly and wear shoes with good grip. An admission contribution is charged.
