About
Centered on August 24 each year, the Atago Festival in Narimatsu, Hikami, Tamba counts its tsukurimono among its main attractions: figures and buildings that each neighborhood association crafts out of everyday things such as gift wrappings, metalware and pottery to capture the mood of the times, competing on ideas and skill. They go on show at a dozen or so spots around town. On the 23rd they are dedicated with prayers against fire and for good harvests and household safety; on the 24th night stalls line the streets and fireworks are offered for about 15 minutes after dark. The festival has carried on for more than 350 years, since the mid-Edo period. It takes place around Narimatsu and Tamba City Chuo Elementary School, about 10 minutes by taxi from JR Iso Station.
