About

Tambasasayama's midsummer bon dance festival takes over the Sannomaru square of the Sasayama Castle ruins and the streets around it for two days. A mass dance takes place around a huge wooden yagura tower, said to be one of the largest in Japan, as big rings of people dance the Dekansho dance to the folk song Dekansho-bushi. The program also includes dance contests, a showcase for young dancers, a performance of the song in its older style, and fireworks. Food stalls and a large night market fill the area, and shops compete in a paper-lantern decoration contest. If it's your first time, join a dance lesson on site to learn the moves before stepping into the ring.
