About
The waterside town of Itako celebrates early summer with this iris festival, which started in 1952 and reached its 75th edition in 2026. Suigo Itako Ayame Park is planted with about one million irises of some 500 varieties, and they usually peak around June 10. The star attraction is the bridal boat, in which a bride travels to her wedding aboard a traditional hand-rowed boat; on Saturdays there is also an evening version. You can take a ride in a boat rowed by a boatman yourself, listen to Itako-bayashi music, see dances from the Itako Gion festival, buy iris plants, and stroll the park when it is lit up at night. It all began modestly, with enthusiasts displaying cut irises in beer bottles and similar containers.
