About

Joso honours Princess Sen (Senhime), granddaughter of Tokugawa Ieyasu, with two linked events: the Joso Senhime Festival and the Tenju Festival. The main draw of the Senhime Festival is a parade in which a Senhime chosen by open application walks through town with an entourage in period dress. The grounds also host an event produced by local high school students, stage shows, and stalls selling local food and specialities, enough to fill a whole day. The Tenju Festival takes its name from Tenju-in, the name she adopted when she became a nun, and is held at Gugyoji, her family temple, where part of her remains rest. There you can attend a tea offering in her memory, view items associated with her and join an open-air tea gathering under fresh green leaves.
